Holiday
Health Tips for Your Pet
Many people will be celebrating the upcoming holidays with good food,
fun parties, family and friends. If traveling out of town for the holidays,
be sure and make arrangements for your pets well ahead of time since most
boarding facilities book up quickly. When making arrangements for your pet
with the boarding facility, make sure you bring along the vaccination and
intestinal parasite information. If you’re staying home, then your pets may
be part of the festivities as well. Here are a few safety tips, however, to
keep in mind regarding your pets and the holiday season:
 |
Turkey-bones can be very dangerous to your dog or cat. Table scraps
can cause intestinal problems and even pancreatitis which can be
fatal. |
 |
Poinsettias, mistletoe and chocolate may cause intestinal or
neurologic problems. |
 |
Chewing
on electrical cords, tinsel, ribbons, and small ornaments can be
harmful. |
 |
Don’t
let your pets drink the water under the Christmas tree- especially
if any additives were used to extend the life of the tree (they may
not do the same for your pet!) |
 |
Keep in
mind that if you put out milk and cookies for Santa, your dog or cat
may want to try a nibble or two first, so make sure Santa can reach
them, but not your pet.
|
Keep your
veterinarian’s phone number (and that of your local Emergency hospital)
available for easy access if needed.
Don’t forget to include your pet in a holiday family photos when possible.
Take these holidays as an opportunity to stop and appreciate all the family
and friends (2 and 4 legged) in your life!
Remember, your pet will still love you even if they didn’t get that Iphone
they wanted! Have a safe and happy holiday season.
